Victorian Population Health Survey 2010

The Victorian Population Health Survey has been conducted each year since 2001 and is based on a sample of 7500 adults aged 18 years and over, randomly selected from households from each of the eight Department of Health regions in the state. In 2010, computer-assisted telephone interviewing was undertaken between May and July. Please refer to the Methods section of the report for a more detailed description of the methods.

Summary of findings

The following is a summary of results from the Victorian Population Health Survey 2012, not adjusted for age.

Smoking

Overall, 15.6 per cent of people aged 18 years or older were current smokers. This proportion was significantly higher in men (18.6 per cent) than women (12.7 per cent).

Alcohol intake

Based on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC 2009) alcohol consumption guidelines, 41.2 per cent of people consumed enough alcohol on at least one occasion each year to put them at increased risk of alcohol-related injury. The proportion was significantly higher in men (54.2 per cent) than women (28.7 per cent).

Summary of findings

A summary of results from the 2013 Victorian Population Health Survey (VPHS) is provided below. All reported prevalence, or proportions, in this summary are crude estimates (not age-adjusted), unless otherwise stated.

Smoking

Overall, 14.2 per cent of people who are 18 years old or over were current smokers in 2013. There was no statistically significant difference in the age-adjusted prevalence of current smoking between men (15.6 per cent) and women (13.2 per cent). There has been a significant decline in the age-adjusted proportion of ‘current smokers’ in both men and women during the period 2003 to 2013.

West Wimmera LGA Profile 2015

The data comes from the VicHealth Indicators Survey 2015, which focused on the health and wellbeing of Victorians. It complements other population health survey work conducted in Victoria, such as the Victorian Population Health Survey.

Data was collected through telephone interviews. The survey was conducted in each of Victoria’s 79 LGAs, with a total sample of 22,819 participants aged 18 and over. Two items, subjective wellbeing and perceptions of safety, were included in previous indicator surveys in 2007 and 2011, therefore changes in these items over time are also reported.

West Wimmera Wellbeing Report

Community Wellbeing Reports contain a select number of community wellbeing indicators which are used to highlight important trends and issues in the community. These reports provide a snapshot of the wellbeing of individual municipalities with comparisons to regional and statewide results.

West Wimmera lies in western Victoria on the South Australian border, about half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. The economy of the shire is dominated by agricultural production, particularly wheat, sheep and vegetables.
